Hello, I’m Jennifer — a former classroom teacher turned 2nd-generation homeschool mother of three kids. I’m also a working homeschool mom, balancing our homeschool life with my current work as an analyst. I believe education does not have to stop when we become mothers, and I love finding ways to create a rich academic environment for my children while continuing to learn and grow myself.
My career has taken some unexpected turns over the years, but the common thread has been education. Being a teacher is probably in my DNA. I’ve taught high school mathematics and statistics, worked in curriculum development, taught test prep for the GRE and GMAT, and worked as a private mathematics and statistics tutor since 2011. I’m passionate about helping homeschool families pursue excellence while also finding joy in the process — especially when it comes to mathematics. That’s why I continue to tutor a few hours each week. I offer one-on-one sessions with students as well as Homeschool Math Strategy Sessions for parents who are trying to figure it out.
When it comes to homeschooling, I’m especially passionate about creating a well-rounded education that combines rigorous academics with meaningful extracurricular pursuits.
Foreign Language Education
My husband and I are both polyglots, and I love sharing our family’s passion for travel and culture through language. In addition to English, we are using and studying French and Latin in our homeschool.
Music Education
Both my husband and I are musicians, so giving our children the opportunity to learn an instrument well and express themselves through music is important to us. When we met, my husband was a bass player in a metal band and I was a violinist in a production of The Pirates of Penzance. Today, our oldest daughter plays violin and fiddle, our son has started cello, and our youngest is already on the waiting list for viola when she turns 3.
Classical Education
I’m passionate about passing along our cultural heritage through the classical languages and the history and culture of Greece and Rome. Their mythology and ideas have influenced Western culture for centuries, from literature to opera and countless other forms of art.
Montessori
Reading Maria Montessori’s work has shaped how I view children, how I parent, how I homeschool, and how I’ve constructed our home environment. I love the emphasis on respecting children as capable individuals and fostering independence from an early age.
About the Blog
This blog is all about the homeschool life — balancing rigorous academics, meaningful extracurriculars, work, and the many responsibilities that come with building a rich family life.
I created this space to inspire and encourage fellow homeschoolers who are holding themselves to a higher standard. Not because we have something to prove, but because we believe in pursuing excellence in everything, especially academics. I believe we can give our children a world-class education at home and, by doing so, give them the world.
I’m a nerd for all things productivity, and since it plays a major role in being able to “get it all done” as a homeschool teacher and working mother, I share as many practical productivity tips as I can.
I also share my thoughts on textbooks and curriculum choices, ideas for keeping little ones busy while older kids are working, and reviews of books about education.
